Evo Devo Art Interview for the Node

I was introduced to many of the evolutionary and developmental biology (evo-devo) themes featured in my work while studying biology at Yale, and while working in Dr. Antónia Monteiro’s lab. When the Node asked me to write about how I go about scientific outreach, I thought a dialogue with Dr. Monteiro would be the perfect way to delve into the process of bringing biological ideas to a broad audience. Many thanks to Dr. Antónia Monteiro, Associate Professor, Yale-NUS-College and Department of Biological Sciences, National University of Singapore. The interview can be found here

A solo version of Theory of Flight is presented as part of a line up of noteworthy scientists and artists pondering the aesthetics of evolution. This All-Day Wonder Cabinet is guest curated by David Rothenberg whose recent book Survival of the Beautiful (Bloomsbury, 2011) investigates art, science, and evolution. Many of the protagonists he encountered in writing his book will join him on stage at the Cantor Film Center to debate the question of whether nature's beauty is actual, imaginary, useful, excessive, or perhaps even entirely beside the point. Laurie Anderson, Suzanne Anker, Philip Ball, Vitaly Komar, David Soldier, Jaron Lanier, and Richard Prum are among the many presenters. Events are free and open to the public. The Survival of the Beautiful All-Day Wonder Cabinet is presented by the New York Institute of the Humanities and is made possible by the Alfred P.
